Construction Risk Management

Insurance Checklist

The AGC Insurance Checklist is intended to help construction contractors determine the precise scope of their current insurance coverage. Many contractors will find it particularly useful to complete this form in conjunction with their insurance brokers. Some contractors may even need their brokers to help them answer several of the questions presented. Ideally, the form will stimulate discussion and dialogue between construction contractors and their insurance brokers, and enhance their typically joint efforts to identify cost-effective ways to fill any significant gaps in the contractor's insurance coverage.

The AGC Risk Profiler

The AGC Risk Profiler is a potentially useful companion to the AGC Insurance Checklist. It is an electronic form that construction contractors and their insurance brokers can use to create, save and continuously update a profile of the business activities that expose such contractors to significant risks of either loss or liability. Once a construction contractor has completed the AGC Insurance Checklist, the AGC Risk Profiler can help the firm compare the results with the scope and nature of the firm's activities.

By and For AGC Members

The AGC Insurance Checklist is a revised and updated version of the checklist found in AGC's risk management handbook, entitled "Risk Management Insurance and Bonding for the Construction Industry." The "Gap Task Force" of AGC's Risk Management Committee reviewed and improved the checklist over a nearly three-year period that began in February of 2004 and concluded in September of 2006.

AGC is deeply indebted to the members of the task force for their hard work on the checklist, and particularly to Ann Hickman, who devoted long hours to the details of this project for and on behalf of the International Risk Management Institute in Dallas, Texas. The other members of this devoted group included:

  • Jim Boone, Alberici Group, St. Louis, Missouri
  • David Dolnick, The Brady Companies, La Mesa, California
  • Steve Henry, Robert Henry Corp., South Bend, Indiana
  • Robert Mahan, The Mahan Broker LLC, Irvine, California
  • William McIntyre, American Contractors Insurance Group, Dallas Texas
  • John Prim, Construction Insurance Consultants, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
  • Terry Tennant, CNA Insurance, Glen Carbon, Illinois
  • Steve Warnick, Austin Commercial, Dallas, Texas
  • Patrick Wielinski, Cokinos, Bosien & Young, Arlington, Texas
