New I-9 Form in Effect

Beginning on Friday, April 3, 2009, employers were required to start using the new I-9 form to verify the employment eligibility of newly hired employees and employees with expiring employment authorizations, according to the Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).  The new form is available on the USCIS website.  Originally scheduled for implementation on February 2, 2009, USCIS delayed the requirement for employers to use the new form in response to a request from the new Administration to allow time to further review the implications of the interim rule.  With the new form, employers are no longer able to accept expired documents for verification purposes and must adhere to a newly revised list of acceptable documents.   For more information, contact Tamika Carter at (703) 837-5382 or cartert@agc.org.
