Newport Beach, California Office of McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. Wins Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award for Mission Hospital's Patient Care Tower Project
The Newport Beach, California Office of McCarthy Building Companies, Inc. was honored today for its work building support and successfully coordinating with a variety of contractors, utility companies and hospital officials during construction of a new patient care tower for Mission Hospital. The project was one of just three to receive the 2009 Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award.
"These awards acknowledge and encourage the fact that great builders must also be clear communicators and strong coordinators," said Doug Pruitt, the association's president. "Finesse, patience and planning are as essential as concrete, steel and glass for converting building plans into built reality."
Pruitt said McCarthy was selected for the award because of its success building the partnerships needed to complete a new patient care tower at Mission Hospital while working at an operational medical facility. McCarthy had to find ways to connect the new tower to the existing hospital while working around an active parking lot, underground tunnel and countless utility lines. If it wasn't for the company's approach to partnering, the project would not have been the success it is today.
"Throughout the Mission Hospital Patient Care Tower project, the team established focused objectives and routinely challenged themselves to surpass previous benchmarks of project goals," said James Ho, Regional Director of Construction for St. Joseph Health Systems. "We are extremely proud to have been a part of this successful and distinguished project. The level of commitment and partnership has set a new precedent for excellence and a model for partnering on future projects."
Pruitt noted that the other two 2009 Marvin M. Black Excellence in Partnering Award winners are Omaha, Nebraska-based Kiewit and Tempe, Arizona-based Sundt Construction for the rehabilitation of I-10 in Tucson; and Granite Construction of Arizona for its work on the Silverbell Road Sanitary Interceptor Project.
In addition to the three main award winners, Pruitt said the following companies received special recognition awards for their partnering efforts: Consigli Construction of Milford, Massachusetts for its work building the Lt. Murphy Combat Training Pool in Newport, Rhode Island; Atlanta, Georgia's Ruby-Collins, Hoboken, Georgia's Environmental Pipeline Rehabilitation Inc. and Orleans, Indiana's Reynolds Inc. for their work on Atlanta's Greensferry Basin Sewer Separation Project; Gilbane Building Company of Vienna, Virginia for the new Dickinson School of Law in State College, Pennsylvania; Colorado's MWH Constructors for its work on the Cape Coral, Florida Utilities Extension Program; San Francisco's Swinerton Builders for its work on the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Flight Projects Center in Pasadena, California; and Longmont, Colorado's Flatiron for its work on the Lenihan Dam Outlet modifications in Los Gatos, California.
