The two construction companies and one training professional who won the AGC’s Education Excellence Awards were announced during the 5th Annual Training, Education and Development Conference, held Oct. 3-4, in Kansas City, Missouri.
The EEA for Supervisor to Executive Management Training was given to McCarthy Holdings of St. Louis, Missouri, for its McCarthy Foundations of Leadership Program that was developed to identify company potential leaders and then provide them with the skills needed to step into the next role at a faster pace. This fast-track plan is also designed to challenge the high-potentials, keep them fully engaged in the company and heighten the overall level of professionalism in the industry. Since this six-month program was created in 2004, more than 150 participants have gone through the course.
The Instructor of the Year Award was given to Mark Federle, professor at Marquette University, for his work with AGC chapters and AGC of America teaching AGC’s Project Manager Development Program. Mark has taught all five PMDP Modules for AGC’s San Antonio and New York State chapters as well as the Master Builders of Western Pennsylvania. His students have cited him for providing real-world examples and enhancing the course with group interaction activities.
The Lee Company of Franklin, Tennessee, received an honorable mention for its craft training program that teaches electrical, HVAC, plumbing, pipefitting, and welding. The firm started its program in 2007 as both a way to fill a gap as veteran skilled employees retired and to improve the company overall through education. The training not only provides improved skills related directly to the job, but also improves safety, productivity, and morale.
The EEAs honor exceptional training programs by AGC members and Chapters. Applicants must demonstrate how their successful program enhanced performance, improved productivity, contributed jobsite success, and furthered the professionalism of the construction industry.
