LIUNA’s Brent Booker Becomes Next Secretary-Treasurer of BCTD

On June 7, the Governing Board of Presidents of the AFL-CIO’s Building and Construction Trades Department (BCTD) unanimously elected Brent Booker to be its secretary-treasurer.  Booker succeeds Sean McGarvey, who was elected BCTC president on April 16, 2012, following the untimely death of Mark Ayers.  Booker had been serving as director of the Construction Department at the Laborers' International Union of North America (LIUNA).  A graduate of the University of Virginia, Booker is a member of Laborers’ Local 795 in New Albany, Ind., and has worked at LIUNA Headquarters since February 2001.  As director of the Construction Department, Booker handled the administration and negotiation of all national agreements.  He also served as the labor co-chairman and president of the National Maintenance Agreement Policy Committee from January 2009 until becoming BCTD secretary-treasurer. Booker’s selection signifies how far LIUNA has come in realigning with the BCTD, which it rejoined in March 2008 after a two-year period of disaffiliation.  LIUNA left the BCTD in March 2006 to help form the National Construction Alliance with two other BCTD disaffiliates, the United Carpenters and Joiners of America and the International Union of Operating Engineers. AGC looks forward to building a relationship with Booker in his new position.
