AGC is pleased to present the three winners of the 2012 Outstanding Student Chapter Contest. Winners receive framed certificates, cash prizes and will be asked to give a presentation on their winning project at the 2013 AGC Annual Convention.
First Place: California State University, Chico has won $1,500 for its Blitz Build project to reconstruct four homes in tornado-struck Joplin, Missouri, in eight days. The AGC Student Chapter’s annual community service project built four homes – 3 from the ground up and one a major remodel – to the drywall stage. In order to complete this amount of work, 90 student volunteers traveled 2,000 miles from California to Missouri. The project was 100% developed, planned, and executed by students. Sponsoring AGC Chapter: AGC of California.
Second Place: Pittsburg State University has won $750 for its work with ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition team to build 7 homes in 7 days. More than 104 PSU students and faculty volunteered their time in 12-hour shifts over the fall break, working as support teams for each of the seven homes; developing job site hazard analysis, on-site safety and OSHA compliance for all construction personnel; inventorying and staging materials; and unloading, handling and transporting building materials. Sponsoring AGC Chapter: AGC of Kansas.
Third Place: Boise State University has won $400 for its project to alter and make structural upgrades to a footbridge at the Discovery Center of Idaho, an interactive science center providing exhibits and educational programs. Sponsoring AGC Chapter: Idaho AGC.
