EPA Announces Public Teleconference on Hydraulic Fracturing Research

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Science Advisory Board (SAB) will hold a public teleconference to receive written and oral comments from the public on new and emerging information related to hydraulic fracturing and drinking water resources.  The public teleconference will be held Wednesday Nov. 20, 2013, from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. EDT. In response to public concern, Congress urged EPA to study the potential impacts of hydraulic fracturing on drinking water resources.  Last March, the SAB formed an SAB Hydraulic Fracturing Research Advisory Panel to provide individual expert advice to EPA on this topic.  Information about panel formation and activities can be found online – click here.  Most recently, SAB has announced an opportunity for the public to provide new and emerging information related to hydraulic fracturing to the panel. Details on Public Teleconference The agenda and other materials in support of the Nov. 20 teleconference call will be available on the SAB website at http://www.epa.gov/sab in advance of the teleconference call.  Persons interested in providing oral statements during the call (limited to five minutes) should contact EPA’s Edward Hanlon via email at hanlon.edward@epa.gov.  Written statements should be emailed to Mr. Hanlon by Wednesday, Nov. 13.  All electronic materials should be submitted without signatures, because SAB will not publish documents with signatures on its website. The information provided to the SAB panel will serve as background to assist in its review of the EPA's draft report on the potential impacts of hydraulic fracturing on drinking water resources. This report is scheduled for completion in December 2014. The SAB was established pursuant to the Environmental Research, Development, and Demonstration Authorization Act (ERDDAA), codified at 42 U.S.C. 4365, to provide independent scientific and technical advice to EPA to better inform agency positions and regulations.
