AGC’s director of safety and health Kevin Cannon was invited by Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis to serve a two year term on the Advisory Committee of Construction Safety and Health.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration tomorrow will reopen the public record on a proposed rule to revise the Occupational Injury and Illness Recording and Reporting Requirements regulation. Notice of the reopening will be published May 17 in the Federal Register.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration launches national outreach campaign On April, 26, Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis announced a national outreach initiative by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration to educate workers and their employers about the hazards of working outdoors in the heat and steps to prevent heat-related illnesses.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration revised its voluntary Outreach Training Program requirements and procedures to improve the quality of outreach classes and ensure the integrity of its authorized trainers.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit rejected a challenge by the National Roofing Contractors Association to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's December 2010 directive on the use of fall protection in residential construction. The directive withdrew an earlier one that allowed certain residential construction employers to bypass some fall protection requirements.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recently issued guidance to help prevent fall-related injuries and deaths among residential construction workers. Data shows that falls are the leading cause of death for workers involved in residential construction.

AGC's Brian Deery joined FHWA Administrator Victor Mendez, Maryland state officials and other national groups to launch of National Work Zone Awareness Week.  This year’s event took place at the Intercounty Connector construction site in Laurel, Md., along Interstate 95 which is the one of the busiest corridors on the east coast.

The month of April is designated as National Safe Digging Month, and AGC is working with its network of Chapters and its contractor members to help raise awareness of pipeline safety, underground damage prevention, and excavation safety.

URS Energy & Construction was among 39 winners in the 2011 Construction Safety Excellence Awards (CSEA) competition. Nearly 100 firms competed over several days during AGC's 92nd Annual Convention.
